23 members of Democracy Matters received a letter from the No to AV campaign, calling on them to provide a “denial to the Yes Campaign, for general circulation”. They have also asked the Charity Commission to ensure that no charity supports the Yes to AV campaign on the grounds that Democracy Matters supports the Yes to AV campaign and that support for the Yes Campaign is a breach of charity law.
No to AV did not ask what our position is, but the fact is that Democracy Matters has not endorsed the Yes to Fairer Votes campaign and will not take a position for or against AV.
The Charity Commission has fairly clear practical guidance on political activities by charities, which should be considered before taking a position on this or any other issue.
Democracy Matters encourages all member organizations to raise awareness and promote debate about the referendum, so that citizens can make an informed decision on 5th May. We also support right of charities which believe a yes or no vote is in pursuit of their objectives to advocate a position if they choose.
For more information on the Yes Campaign, updates on the legal position or materials and how to get involved, contact George Gabriel (email glgabriel87@gmail.com) or visit Yes to Fairer Votes.
For information on the No Campaign, visit www.no2av.org or ring 0792 9124 975 (24 hours).
The Electoral Commission have produce guidance on campaigning in the referendum and their “Do Politics” is considering what materials to promote the referendum and they would like to hear from you. Please get in touch if you want help communicating with a particular audience or to let them know what materials you would find useful.
The Alternative Vote referendum is an important issue for the future of our political system and we have a responsibility to ensure that people are aware of the vote and understand the issues.
